New Intel Core i9 processor headed to the Mac Pro
Only recently Apple updated it's line of desktop computers and notebooks, intentionally leaving out the Mac Pro

which is currently the fastest computer that Apple has to offer.

On the other hand we see Intel's roadmap for the new 6-core Xeon chips code-named 'Gulftown' which shall be commercially available under the Core i9 name and will be Intel's first six-core, dual-socket processor.

This could definitely mean that a new Mac Pro with the Core i9 processor could be making its way to the Apple Store as early as the first quarter of 2010.

The Gulftown processor, as tested for performance by the Polish website PCLab, could pose a performance boost of up to 50% in speed as compared to previous quad-core Xenon during parallel tasks, and uses up to 50% less power.

And that's not all, another side-rumor suggests that the new Mac Pro will have a modified motherboard with a 10Gbit/second Ethernet port and will support 8GB and 16GB RAM modules, allowing for a maximum of 128GB of RAM.

Possibly Apple will have a short-term exclusive use agreement with Intel to use the Core i9 processors on the Mac Pro for a while. So in case you were planning to get a Mac Pro, now is the time to wait.
